Wood chip applications

How to use wood chips

Wood chips can be helpful in a range of situations. Here are some common ways we see wood chips used locally.

Wood chips can be helpful in a range of situations. Here are some common ways we see wood chips used locally in Whistler and Pemberton.

Mulch

Wood chips are a great organic mulch for planting areas and around trees. A 3-inch layer suppresses weed growth and regulates soil moisture and temperature.

Path material

Wood chips can be used to create an environment and budget-friendly informal path in your garden. The wood chips will also help prevent soil erosion.

Raised garden beds

Using the “lasagna bed process”, wood chips can be great for building up raised beds. Lasagna beds allow you to compost in place. You can learn more here.

Compost

If you do your own composting, adding wood chips will contribute nutrients to the pile. Note that if the wood chips have larger pieces, decomposition will take longer.

Around a play area

Wood chips are great for adding cushion to kids’ play areas (such as jungle gyms and swing sets) and preventing heavily trafficked areas from turning muddy.

Compost toilet systems

Compost toilets are a zero-waste alternative to traditional toilet systems. Wood chips can be used for composting human “manure” at no cost to the environment.

Growing mushrooms

Different mushrooms grow best on different substrates. For example, wine cap mushrooms are easy to grow on wood chip piles. To learn how, check out this article.

Interim landscaping

Have an unused area in your garden that you don’t know what to do with? Add a thick layer of protective wood chip mulch for a good interim measure.

Mulch (again!)

In addition to using wood chips for mulch in your garden, you can apply a layer to any plants and trees you have in large pots. Any open soil, even potting soil, can benefit.
